Creating designs that sell is a 2 step process.
1) Find your target audience
Most campaigners make the mistake of designing a t-shirt first and then starts finding the audience to sell it.
It is a wrong approach. Instead one should first find your buyers first and then create your design accordingly.
Before creating your design you should know the answers to the following questions about your target audience:
- Who would wear this shirt; think of demographic details – their gender, age, location, etc.?
- What kind of interests or hobbies do these people have?
- What kind of social media groups would they belong to or other online communities?
- Does this group appear to be passionate enough to purchase products?
This discovery process is called “targeting” in marketing language and will allow you to better understand how to effectively promote your tee to the “right” people once your campaign is live.

- New Yorkers participating in an annual Cancer Walk
2) Creating a design
Now that you’ve determined your audience and have found a niche you’re interested in selling to, it’s time to do some research!
T-shirts have always been a powerful medium to show who you are – some like to spread a message, some like to show their belonging to an institution, some like to flaunt their attitude, some like to show their love, passion towards their hobby / profession.
Sometimes a message is more important than the design.Because if people can connect with your message, they’re more inclined to purchase your design and wear it!
